The Curse of the One Hundred Sons
A dark-fantasy manga tragedy. The Mahabharata told through the eyes of Princess Gandhari.
A tragedy before the war
Long before Kurukshetra, before the throne of Hastinapur was contested, there was a child in a flower-filled meadow and a stranger who called her special. He granted her a boon. He did not warn her what it would cost.
Duryodhana Purana is the untold origin of the Kauravas — a dark-fantasy retelling of the Mahabharata that traces the first thread of ruin to its source: a girl's quiet kindness, met with a god's cruel generosity. From that single moment unspools a princess's blindfold, a kingdom's heir, and a hundred brothers who will one day burn a dynasty to the ground.
The meadow where everything begins.
A child who does not flinch. A wandering sage who smiles too wide. "May the number of your seed be plentiful. You will be blessed with one hundred sons in this lifetime." She says thank you. She does not yet know that a hundred sons is a weight no mother was meant to carry.
An heirless throne
Bhishma rides to the court of King Subala with a proposition. Gandhari's hand for the sightless prince Dhritarashtra. A kingdom's heir in exchange for a daughter. The negotiator is forceful; the father has little choice. The daughter has none.
A vow never to remove it.
If her husband would not see the world, neither would she. A silk strip, a quiet vow — and the mother of the Kauravas spends the rest of her life in willed darkness, feeling for the shape of the sons the god promised her, and the shape of what they will become.
